My parents and both sets of grandparents grew up in the tea estates of Sri Lanka.
I remember visiting them in Hatton and Nawalapitiya when till I was 12 years old.
What was true back then is still true today:
Tamil tea estate workers are the most marginalized group in my home country.
During their early years, they would have gone to a school very similar to the Gartmore Tamil Vidyalayam (school) which is home to 368 children of tea estate workers in Maskeliya - one of the many plantation communities in the island.

Although the school is located in the picturesque Gartmore Tea Estates, the infrastructure is in need of much needed repair since the 1950s.
Cross Culture Tours -our tour company-is partnering with ADRA Sri Lanka who will oversee the implementation of this renovation project. Once the fundraising goal is reached, they can start the project which will be finished by the time the tour begins.
Your funds will go into funding the following renovations to this school:
Roof repair
Doors replacement
Windows repair or replacement
Floor renovation
Renovation of toilets
Replacement of electrical wiring
Painting of the building interior and exterior
Classroom separating wall construction
Patches and touchup of walls and outdoor pavement
Repair water connection to the school and toilets
The 2024 tour will include a trip to this school to see the completed changes and hang out with the students of hardworking tea estate workers!
But we CANNOT do this without your help!
